Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution and Dar Al-Ifta Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Cooperation in the Field of Halal

Jerusalem – The Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution and Dar Al-Ifta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation and integration between the technical and Sharia aspects of halal certification. This initiative aims to help Palestinian products meet export requirements in Islamic countries and enhance opportunities for national products to access new markets.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution by its Director General, Dr. Haidar Hajjeh, and on behalf of the Palestinian Dar Al-Ifta by His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and Chairman of the Supreme Fatwa Council.

The MoU aims to coordinate efforts and expertise between the two parties on technical and Sharia-related matters associated with the halal system, and to develop halal certification procedures in accordance with the standards and requirements adopted in target countries and markets. This will enhance the credibility of Palestinian halal certificates and strengthen the ability of national establishments to export their products and expand their presence in Islamic markets.

Under the MoU, the two parties will cooperate in providing Sharia opinions on matters related to halal requirements for food and non-food products, reviewing Sharia procedures related to slaughtering, ingredients, and supply chains, as well as exchanging expertise and implementing joint training programs in halal auditing.

The cooperation will also include strengthening compliance with relevant international standards, including OIC/SMIIC 2 and GSO 2055-2. This will help improve the efficiency of halal certification procedures, ensure greater alignment with the requirements of Islamic countries, and facilitate access to foreign markets for Palestinian products that have obtained halal certification.

The MoU represents a step toward developing the national halal system and strengthening integration between technical and Sharia authorities. It will serve Palestinian producers and consumers, enhance the credibility of Palestinian halal certificates, and support the competitiveness of national products and their ability to enter new markets, particularly in Islamic countries.
