Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution Organizes Workshop on the Requirements of the Palestinian Environmental Label

The Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution (PSMI) organized a specialized workshop for its staff focusing on the requirements and mechanisms for implementing the Palestinian Environmental Label. The workshop was held as part of the activities of the EU4Business – Palestine project, which aims to strengthen the national quality infrastructure and align it with international requirements and standards, thereby supporting the competitiveness of Palestinian products and services.

The workshop focused on introducing the technical and regulatory foundations of environmental labels and claims, drawing on a number of international standards issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), including ISO 14020, ISO 14021, ISO 14024, ISO 14025, and ISO 14026. These standards serve as key references for regulating environmental labels and claims related to the environmental impact of products and services.

During the workshop, Eng. Mohammad Al-Sayed, the project’s Infrastructure Component Officer, presented the key requirements set out in international standards related to environmental labels. He explained the principles governing the development of environmental claims and the methods for verifying them, ensuring that information provided to consumers and relevant stakeholders is accurate, transparent, and reliable.

For his part, Dr. Mohammad Al-Dalak addressed the requirements for developing and implementing an Environmental Label Scheme. His presentation covered the process of identifying the targeted sectors and product categories, establishing environmental criteria and requirements, as well as the procedures for assessment, verification, and awarding the label, along with mechanisms for monitoring continued compliance with the requirements.

The workshop highlighted the importance of enhancing knowledge and developing a shared understanding among the Institution’s staff of the relevant international standards and references for environmental labels. This contributes to developing the Palestinian Environmental Label in accordance with international best practices, strengthening consumer confidence in products awarded the label, and supporting sustainable production and consumption patterns.

The workshop was held as part of the activities of the EU4Business – Palestine project and within the framework of the Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution’s efforts to develop its services and systems in line with international standards and practices. It also reflects the Institution’s commitment to supporting the green economy and sustainability and enhancing the competitiveness of Palestinian products in local and international markets.
