The Board of Directors of the Standards and Metrology Institution approves and updates 183 new standards.”
Ramallah – The Board of Directors of the Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution (PSMI) held its fourth meeting for 2025, chaired by Minister of Industry Mr. Arafat Assafour, with the participation of the Vice Chairman of the Board and President of the Palestinian Federation of Industries Mr. Nassar Nassar, the Director General of the Institution Eng. Haider Hajjah, and members of the Board.
During the meeting, the Board discussed a range of strategic issues aimed at supporting national industry, enhancing the competitiveness of Palestinian products in local and international markets, and encouraging industrial establishments to comply with quality and safety standards.
As part of efforts to develop quality infrastructure and strengthen confidence in national products, the Board approved the adoption of 183 Palestinian standards, including 79 new standards and 104 updated standards, covering a wide range of sectors. These notably included construction products, food, cosmetics, medical devices, textiles, electrotechnical products, petroleum derivatives, furniture, personal protective equipment, tobacco, footwear, metals, fuel equipment and fire safety, plastic pipes and fittings, paints and varnishes, plastics, and other industrial and agricultural sectors.
The Board also ratified 62 standards that had undergone review, decided to maintain the validity of 48 standards, and cancel 14 standards, based on the recommendations of the relevant technical committees and after five years of their adoption, in line with technical developments and internationally recognized standards.
In a related context, the Board reviewed the draft executive plan of the Standards and Metrology Institution for 2026, which was prepared in alignment with the National Policy Agenda, the Institution’s Strategic Plan for 2023–2029, the Government Digital Transformation Strategy, and the executive plan of the National Quality Policy, in preparation for its approval and implementation.
The Board also reviewed the system for granting Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification, which was developed in consultation with the public and private sectors. The system targets the food, dietary supplements, cosmetics, and medical devices sectors, contributing to improving the quality of Palestinian products, facilitating their access to Arab and global markets, and ensuring the health and safety of Palestinian consumers.
Regarding mandatory technical regulations, the Board decided to recommend to the Council of Ministers the designation of the competent authorities responsible for monitoring and inspecting the implementation of Mandatory Technical Regulation No. (123-2025) related to electrical equipment and appliances designed to operate within specific voltage ranges, each within its respective jurisdiction.
The Board also discussed mechanisms for regulating and monitoring the ready-mix concrete industry and the asphalt industry.
