The Tobacco and Its Products Classification Committee held its sixteenth meeting in person and via the Teams platform, with the participation of representatives from seven entities.

Dr. Ahmed Ghanem, the committee rapporteur, stated that work on completing the committee’s plan was carried out in accordance with the established mechanism aligned with international best practices for developing standards. The participation of representatives from official, civil, and private entities was marked by cooperation and engagement, especially since the projects discussed by the committee—related to tobacco and its products—are important for reducing the health and environmental risks associated with smoking, as well as ensuring that consumers are not misled or provided with adulterated products.

The meeting documents included two draft updates to previous standards concerning testing methods for various types of tobacco products or their alternatives. The importance of these standards lies in providing relevant authorities with reliable testing methods to verify the quality of these products. The committee decided to submit recommendations to the Board of Directors to adopt these updates as revised standards that would replace the previous ones.
