This Palestinian standard specifies the requirements that must be met in in-shell sweet chestnuts, after removal of the spiny husk, of cultivated varieties of Castanea sativa Mill. (sweet chestnut), Castanea crenata Siebold et Zucc. (Japanese chestnut), and Castanea mollissima Blume (Chinese chestnut), as well as their hybrids, to be supplied fresh to the consumer after packaging, with chestnuts intended for industrial processing being excluded.

Sweet chestnuts containing non-segmented kernels may be marketed under a special commercial designation (such as “marron”).
